In a Masterful stroke of irony our fine, upstanding, and well prepared President Obama declared this week – specifically May 24th – May 30th to be National Hurricane Preparedness Week. The mark of genius is, in demonstrating the Federal Governments continued efforts to be completely ill-prepared to handle anything related to a hurricane, he signed the proclamation and announced it – wait for it…….. on MAY 26th! To recap; on May 26th President Obama declared the week of May 24th – May 30th to be Hurricane Preparedness week.
At first I thought it might be the declaration of a new annual awareness policy and was ready to discount the gaffe, but upon re-reading the entire proclamation – it’s ONLY for 2009. Here’s the exact quote:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States do hereby proclaim May 24 through May 30, 2009, as National Hurricane Preparedness Week.
Here’s my favorite part of the letter:
I call on all Americans — including private citizens and those working in government, business, and the nonprofit sector — to plan ahead and help secure the safety and property of those who face advancing storms.
So plan ahead by deciding to declare a week as National Hurricane Preparedness week – HALF WAY INTO THE WEEK!
In honor of National Hurricane Preparedness Week and in answering the Presidents call for the nonprofit sector (you don’t think we make money at this do you? :) ) to PLAN AHEAD and help secure the safety of those in Hurricane Zones, we’ll do our part and write an outstanding blog post about how to prepare for a Hurricane….. probably next week.
In seriousness, I’ve been thinking about doing a post like this anyway. But to do it right I want to get stories and input from those who lived through it. Research coming up! There are PLENTY of posts within the American Preppers Network that deal with Hurricane Preparedness – Preppers don’t need a Presidential Directive to get off our butt and get ready to help our neighbors!
In further seriousness, Royal’s first post is a kind of prelude for an extended series on Evacuation Preparedness that will have it’s first post shortly – but it’s been in the works for quite a while cause well, we’ve been planning ahead.
Thanks Mr. President! We’ll try to do our part, now hurry up and go spend some more of my grandkid’s money!
Good post. The smart ones would already be prepared.

Oh. My. Gosh. Wow, way to have foresight Mr. President! And thanks for the advance notice. Love your comment about a hurricane preparedness pro… next week. Hysterical. It’s wild that Utah has actually experenced a hurricane in the last decade. Perhaps I should blog about that, too…

The more I think about this, the more that comes to mind. Let’s expect the government to warn us of a crises in the future after it’s already hit. Sheesh…
